When you reach Butuku; Rwebisengo in
particular, one unique thing that gets to your attention is how the people adore
a popular traditional drink drawn from nature locally known as Obugeme. All people
young and old will tell you about Obugeme the first time you interact with them,
they will tell you how sweet and how exciting Obugeme is. Drinking Obugeme with
friends is the best on an evening out.
When my chance came to sip on Obugeme,
indeed I found all that to be true. What caught my intention was actually not
the sweetness of the drink, but it’s making. It’s such an interesting
phenomenon I found that Obugeme is a drink made and refined by nature. Man has
no much influence on its formation other than collecting it. The fine drink is
collected from a palm (locally “ebikooga”) like tree trunk using long grass into
a container ready to be drunk without adding no water or nothing else. Actually
it is said that adding water to Obugeme spoils its taste and fineness. More
interesting is that Obugeme ferments with the rise in temperature; in the
morning, Obugeme tastes like fine fruit juice very sweet and fresh yet in the
evening Obugeme becomes alcoholic. By 6pm Obugeme is fully alcohol with that
bitter taste.
Obugeme has immense benefits including
health, sexual, social and economic benefits. Obugeme is a great appetizer and
a great natural energy drink. On a good day with friends out, Obugeme will get
you socialize and make you feel good. For those that love alcohol, alcoholic
Obugeme will get you high yes but strong with no drop of hangover in the
morning. For those passionate about sex and making love, Obugeme surely will
give you the best sexual experience; long lasting for men and honey for the
ladies. Important to note is that Obugeme is the traditional drink of the
Batuku (equivalent to tonto of the Batooro) used on different ceremonies
including Kweranga or introductions or traditional marriage ceremonies.
Obugeme has instantly become one of my
favorite drinks. I’m on a search for friends from Butuku so they can deliver to
me Obugeme all the time because wine and Smirnoff are facing the ditch soon.
Let me be the one you give Obugeme for goodness and love.
